Ο Harris εμπνεύστηκε το όνομα από την ταινία “ The Man in the Iron Mask” και το “Iron Maiden” είναι ένα όργανο βασανισμού που χρησιμοποιούνταν το μεσαίωνα.
Το Μάρτιο του 1982 κυκλοφορούν το “Number Of The Beast” (No 1 στα UK charts), ένα από τα κλασσικότερα άλμπουμ όλων των εποχών! Κυκλοφόρησαν το καταπληκτικό “Piece Of Mind” το 1983 όπου ξεχώρισαν τα “Trooper” και “Flight Of Icarus” που έγιναν και singles. Ακολούθησε τα πολύ καλό “Powerslave” το 1984 που ξεχώρισαν τα “Aces High” και “2 Minutes To Midnight”.Η μπάντα έκανε την παγκόσμια περιοδεία “World Slavery Tour” και ακολούθησαν 193 εμφανίσεις σε 13 μήνες σε πολλές χώρες.
Κυκλοφορούν το “Live after Death” το 1985, και έπειτα το “Somewhere In Time” το 1986 όπου πειραματίζονται και περνούν νέα στοιχεία στη μουσική τους προσθέτοντας βάθος στον ήχο τους. Ακολουθεί το “7th Son Of The 7th Son” το 1988 στο οποίο χρησιμοποιούν για πρώτη φορά keyboards σε studio άλμπουμ.
To 1990 ο Janick Gers αντικαθιστά τον Adrian Smith (που έκανε ένα σόλο άλμπουμ με το δικό του group, τους ASAP) στην κιθάρα και οι Maiden κυκλοφορούν το “No Prayer For The Dying” το 1990. Ξεχώρισε το "Bring Your Daughter... to the Slaughter” το οποίο μπήκε και στο soundtrack της ταινίας “Nightmare on Elm Street 5”.Ακολουθεί το εξαιρετικό “Fear Of The Dark” το 1992. Ενώ συνεχίζουν με επιτυχημένα live και κυκλοφορούν τα “Real Live/Dead One” και “Live At Donnighton” το 1993, η Metal κοινότητα και οι φανατικοί οπαδοί τους συγκλονίζονται από τα νέα ότι ο Bruce Dickinson θα αποχωρήσει από την μπάντα.
Ανάμεσα βγάζουν και ένα best of άλμπουμ το “Best Of The Beast”.
Στις 8 Σεπτεμβρίου 2003 κυκλοφορούν το κάπως διαφορετικό “Dance Of Death” και το 2005 το live CD/DVD “Death On The Road” από την εμφάνισή τους στο Dortmund στη Γερμανία. Ακόμη για να γιορτάσει τα 30 χρόνια του το γκρουπ κυκλοφορεί το ντοκυμαντέρ-DVD “The Early Days” και κάνει και την αντίστοιχη περιοδεία “Eddie Rips Up The World“. Πριν λίγο καιρό, για την ακρίβεια το 2006, επανέρχονται με το δυνατό “A Matter Of Life And Death”. Το Δεκέμβριο του 2006 ηχογραφούν ένα live άλμπουμ στα Abbey Road Studios το “Live From Abbey Road”. Τελείωσαν την περιοδεία “A Matter of Life and Death” με ένα live στο Λονδίνο στο Brixton Academy στις 24 Ιουλίου 2007 για να βοηθήσουν τον Cliff Burr σε ένα πρόβλημα υγείας. Επανέρχονται με την παγκόσμια περιοδεία “Somewhere Back in Time” που είναι σε εξέλιξη και θα έχει το σκηνικό του Powerslave.

The story of Iron Maiden begins in 1971, when 15 year old Steve Harris, inspired by the likes of Wishbone Ash, Jethro Tull and early Genesis bought a copy Telecaster bass for the then princely sum of £40.
Steve had previously harboured visions of one day playing soccer for his beloved West Ham and was actually signed to them on schoolboy forms. However, the talent pool in the Hammer's youth organisation in those days was overflowing and the number of players who actually made it into the professional game were very few. The continuous playing and training regime also meant that that young Harry couldn't join his mates in drinking, watching bands and bullying girls.
After thinking long and hard, he abandoned hopes of a soccer career and built up a strong liking and knowledge of rock music. He taught himself how to play by playing along to his favourite records and jamming with friends. This led to the formation of a band called Influence who then changed their name to Gypsy's Kiss.

The Gypsies made their debut at a talent contest in Poplar, lasting all of six gigs before calling it a day. Steve fired by a burning ambition hooked up with a band called Smiler. The other band members were several years older than him, Steve picked up some valuable experience but still felt stifled. Smiler were a "good time boogie " band and although they
played an early version of "Innocent Exile", they turned down "Burning Ambition" and made it clear that they didn't expect their bass player to leap around the stage and write songs. Steve finally realised that the only way to do what he wanted was to put his own band together and at the end of 1975, Iron Maiden was born. Steve got the name from seeing an Iron Maiden in an old movie of "The Man In The Iron Mask". It was a metal coffin with spikes on the inside and the victims were placed inside it and skewered to death.
In the spring of 1976, the band secured a residency at The Cart and Horses pub in Stratford in London's East End. The first couple of gigs went okay, but Steve still felt there was something missing. Vocalist Paul
Day was replaced by ex-Smiler songsmith Dennis Wilcock and he recommended a talented young guitarist by the name of Dave Murray. This put the back up of the resident guitarists Terry Rance and Paul Sullivan who took it as an insult to their talent and departed. Bob
Sawyer, who used the name Bob D'Angelo, was recruited as second guitarist and with Ron Rebel on drums the first proper Maiden line-up came into being. As well as the Cart the band began to get gigs all over East London, building up a strong local following. After six months, the line- up changed again. Bob left as instead of trying to complement Dave's guitar - Bob kept trying to compete with him - a strict no-contest.

Then, after a row at The Bridgehouse, Den fired Dave who went off to join Urchin, his old mate Adrian Smith's band.
With all the hassles, the band decided to temporarily abandon the twin guitars concept and Terry Wapram joined as sole guitarist and Tony Moore was recruited on keyboards. Ron Rebel had decided he couldn't handle the aggravation and also left to be replaced by Barry Purkis - who would later call himself Thunderstick.
The new line-up played one gig at The Bridgehouse and it was painfully obvious that keyboards were not the answer. Exit Moore followed by Wapram who claimed he couldnt play without keyboards! Steve went down to an Urchin gig and persuaded Davey to rejoin the Maiden fold. Den. then quit just before a gig in South London and when Thunderstick also left, things looked bleak. Steve recruited ex-Smiler drummer Doug Sampson and while the three of them rehearsed they looked for a new singer. Eventually, a mate of Steve's recommended Paul Di'Anno. Paul passed his audition with flying colours and the band set about their comeback. Things were difficult at first as in 1977 the Punk / New Wave
revolution was in full swing and most of the venues were only booking new wave acts. The record companies felt the same. The band did receive offers, if they were prepared to cut their hair and go punk. Needless to say you can guess Harry's answer.
By late 1978, the situation had improved enough to allow the band to work to make their comeback and get regular gigs. They realised that they needed a demo and so on New Year's Eve they were in Spaceward
Studios near Cambridge recording "Prowler", "Invasion", "Strange World" and "Iron Maiden". The £200 cost of the recording session was all that they had and so the band could not buy the master tape.
When they went back a couple of weeks later to pay for the tape and mix, the tape had been wiped, leaving them with just the cassettes from the original session unedited and unmixed. Dave gave his copy to Neal Kay, a DJ with a passionate love of hard rock who held regular rock nights at The Soundhouse, which adjoined the Bandwagon pub in Kingsbury, North London. The band were now finding it easier to book gigs and gained a residency at The Ruskin Arms in Manor Park. Neal
played the tape at one of his Soundhouse nights and was astonished at the reaction. It became the most requested item for months and Maiden began to play there. The demo tape had also come to the attention of
Rod Smallwood. A rugby mate of Rod's, who also worked with Steve, passed the tape on, and after listening to it and checking the band out, offered his services as manager. Rod arranged gigs all over the country to
allow the band to build-up a nation-wide following and arranged gigs in or near central London to get record companies to check out Maiden. One such gig was at The Marquee on October 13th. John Darnley came from EMI to see Maiden and Rod had a side bet with the Marquee manager that the gig would sell-out (700 fans) by 7pm. Rod won his bet and EMI signed Iron Maiden the following month. What followed was endless music mayhem from the most power packed bands ever to hit the heavy metal scene-Iron Maiden.

Η ΙΣΤΟΡΙΑ ΤΟΥ EDDIE
Eddie, Iron Maiden's mascot, first appeared with the band after their stage manager at the time (Dave Beasly) designed a head that was placed above the drummer at concerts and periodically spat blood through it's mouth. The joke which went with the head was:
'A woman had given birth to just a head, the doctor told her she needn't worry since he would come up with a suitable body for good 'ole Eddie within a year or five. So five years later Eddie's father entered the room on Eddie's birthday and said: "well today's your birthday, and boy do we have a surprise for you!" after which Eddie replied: "Oh no!, not another bloody hat!"' Eddie did not have a body until Iron Maiden met Derek Riggs, who designed a body to accompany the head. The band subsequently decided to keep this body secret until their first album 'Iron Maiden' was released. In 1980 the body was revealed, with the first incarnation of Eddie looking remarkably different from other Eddies since. It also only showed the top half of his torso.
Eddie caused much controversy for the band on the Sanctuary and Women In Uniform single covers. The Sanctuary cover depicted the Iron Maiden mascot having stabbed Margaret Thatcher to death. (Margaret Thatcher was the British Prime Minister at the time). This was censored out and widely believed to have been banned by Magaret Thatcher herself which is false. Rod Smallwood (the bands manager) had decided the black bar that was put on the cover to censor it was good publicity. The black bar is only present in the UK edition, the European releases do not have it.
On the Women In Uniform sleeve Margaret Thatcher is shown hiding behind a wall waiting to ambush Eddie with a sub-machine gun, Eddie is shown walking along hand in hand with a nurse and a schoolgirl which caused more controversy and ended with feminists branding Iron Maiden sexist.
The Number of the Beast sleeve showed Eddie controlling the devil whilst the devil is controlling a smaller puppet of Eddie. Many people believe this is where the misconception that Iron Maiden are a "satanist band" (something that the band have always fiercely denied)

For Iron Maiden's album Piece Of Mind Eddie was in a mental asylum and had been lobotomised (the reason for the bolt on his head). The bolt from this has remained with eddie throughout the years.
The Powerslave cover depicted Eddie as a huge shrine on a pyramid in ancient egypt. This cover had many hidden messages included on it such as "Bollokz" on the left hand side of the pyramid and "What a load of crap" on the right hand side. Above the entrance to the shrine is Derek Riggs logo
The Somewhere In Time logo is full of hidden messages (All of which were featured in our article, Somewhere In Time Cover Art Secrets) and shows Eddie as a futuristic being with a laser gun, looking much like a 'Terminator' (Terminator I was released in 1984, with Somewhere in Time released in 1986 so this was very much the imagery of the time). This graphic imagery can be directly contrasted against the Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son artwork, which shows just the top half of Eddie over a lake with his own entrails clutched in his hand.
The No Prayer for the Dying (1990) artwork showed Eddie in a rather old state cracking out of a grave and Fear of the Dark (1992) was produced by a different artist (Melvyn Grant). The X Factor differed from the normal style of Iron Maiden covers showing Eddie with his legs missing and on an Electric Chair. Many people thought this was a computer model when they first saw it but in reality it was a photograph of a minature model made by Hugh Syme

The Virtual XI cover was based on the Ed Hunter video game in which you play as Eddie blasting your way through many familiar parts of Iron Maiden's history. The reunion album Brave New World (2000) featured an Eddie face smiling down from the sky on a futuristic London. Some regard this as the best Iron Maiden cover artwork ever.Shortly afterward, after he produced artwork for the Wicker Man single release that was rejected, Derek Riggs announced that the Wicker Man single release art would be last piece that he would create for Iron Maiden, attributing this to the fact that "they are too difficult to work with"
On "Visions Of The Beast" (2003) Eddie gets his brain back in the final sequence as it flies around him. Even though he recieved his brain back, the artwork on the Give Me Ed Tour Eddie still retained the bolt on his forehead. (The Dance of Death artwork did not feature the bolt on Eddies forehead)
2003 saw Iron Maiden's new album "Dance Of Death" achieve great success although many questioned its peculiar choice of artwork. It featured Eddie looking much like the grim reaper on a geometrically patterned dance floor with hooded characters in the background. In the foreground 11 CGI people and 2 CGI animals appeared. There appear to be many mistakes in this artwork as has been pointed out many times (These can be read in the article Dance Of Death Cover Mistakes)
Eddie has evolved greatly over the 25+ years of Iron Maiden's career and he will undoubtedly evolve and change with the band, before their reign at the top of Metal music is over.
